Gary MacEoin

By Frank Maurovich, Editor, Maryknoll
When I started The Catholic Voice in the then new Oakland Diocese in 1963, I bought Gary MacEoin's weekly column because I wanted a solidly conservative writer to balance some of the more progressive Catholic lay columnists we were running at the time. Then I had the pleasure of working with Gary when we were both in Rome covering Vatican II.

Needless to say, Gary left Rome as a progressive, inspired by the hope that Vatican II produced for a Church in the modern world that would truly respond to the signs of the times. He fought with his pen far better than most of us for those unfulfilled hopes to be realized.
