National Catholic Reporter has posted the following notice on its Web site, NCRonline.org.

Vatican to release long-awaited instruction on annulment

Tomorrow, Feb. 8, the Vatican will release a long-awaited instruction on annulment, Dignitas Connubii, which has been in preparation for almost 10 years. It's of special interest in the United States, where church courts generate almost 70 percent of the world’s annulments each year, a fact that has long angered some Vatican officials.

Watch the NCR web site tomorrow for analysis from NCR Rome correspondent John Allen.

Allen explains that the document is not a crackdown on American practice, but it also doesn’t contain several reforms many American bishops and canon lawyers had hoped for which would have made the process even faster and easier. Those reforms had been in an earlier draft, but were removed after skirmishes in the Vatican.

Allen’s piece reveals the behind-the-scenes debates that led to Dignitas Connubii."
